Hathras Case: CBI Takes Over The Case From The Uttar Pradesh Police

In a major development in the Hathras Case of Uttar Pradesh, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Saturday took over the investigation of the alleged gangrape case of a 19-year-old Dalit girl in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras. Earlier the Yogi Adityanath’s government recommended a CBI probe into the Hathras case. A letter was also sent in this regard to the central government.

The alleged rape and murder of a 20-year-old woman in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras will be now investigated by the CBI. The case received national media’s attention and mass outrage by the opposition and the public for the suspicious role of Uttar Pradesh Police.

The Uttar Pradesh State government had earlier said though the state police have diligently investigated the crime as and when the charges were made and modified by the victim while being treated in a hospital, it had requested the Centre for a CBI probe finding vested interests and political parties trying to take undue advantage and tarnish the image of the state and the chief minister by peddling false and motivated narratives through social and other media.

Though the UP Government recommended the CBI probe on their own, a large part of the criticism goes to the UP government’s handling of the case, including its treatment of the young woman’s traumatised family, whom they allegedly locked up in their home to hastily cremate their daughter at night.

The family is now openly calling it a case of rape and murder and is demanding justice while on the other hand, the primary accused has claimed innocence in a letter to Hathras SP Vineet Jaiswal, saying that her family did not approve of their “friendship” and it was they who beat her up to a point where she became critical. The family dismissed the letter as a “tactic” to escape punishment.
